While this article was previously published on Remodeling at the end of 2019, the design tips still hold true as we get through the first few months of 2020.
As 2020 edges closer, experts are continuing to project the trends that will remain from 2019 and the new ones that will emerge in 2020. The design space is no different, and experts spoke with AZ Big Media to share which "innovative and exciting" design ideas are poised for big years in the year ahead.
Subway Tile
From kitchen backsplashes to bathroom floors, there’s nothing that brings on the urban vibes quite like subway tiles. But 2020 forgoes the basics and elevates this trend to its more glamorous cousin. Meet mother of pearl subway tiles, the glossier version that adds instant dazzle to any space. Mother of pearl accents have the same effects to your space as a pair of pearl earrings elevating a little black dress. This allows the creation of visual interest without committing to vivid palettes by simply upgrading the luster factor.
Open Shelving
When it comes to kitchens, 2020 is all about casual, effortless design, which is why open shelving is here to stay. The prominent trend of the past years is still experiencing a major moment in interior design—and it shows no signs of slowing down. Opt for wooden shelves, preferably in a different tone from your kitchen cabinets and keep the aesthetic on a minimalistic spectrum. Next: style shelves with a cohesive collection of bamboo wood bowls, handmade ceramics and cups in a fused palette of shades.
Classic Blue
The official color for 2020 is the purest form of classic blue—and the interior design world definitely took notice. From accent walls to matte furniture pieces and from vibrant velvet to accent china, classic blue is everywhere. PANTONE eloquently defines the trending shade: ‘Instilling calm, confidence, and connection, this enduring blue hue highlights our desire for a dependable and stable foundation on which to build as we cross the threshold into a new era.’
